PSA Peugeot Citroën and Mitsubishi Motors to Develop Electric Version of Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and PSA Peugeot Citroën have signed an agreement to start the technical development of an electric version of Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo LCVs built at the PSA Vigo plant in Spain.

Under this new cooperative agreement, both partners will specify all technical and industrial aspects to be able to commence production of these electric versions by the end of 2012.

This signature is a continuation of the previous Cooperative Agreement on the jointly-developed European Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-ZERO models based on the i-MiEV new-generation electric vehicle.

Report: Mitsubishi Planning 2M US$22K EV by FY 2012

The Nikkei reports that Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to bring the price of its electric vehicles down some 30% to around ¥2 million (US$22,000) by fiscal 2012.

Unveiled last July, the i-MiEV electric car can now be purchased in Japan, including government subsidies, for ¥2.84 million (US$31,300).

But Mitsubishi Motors sees the need for further price cuts considering the growing popularity of hybrids priced around 2 million yen. Factoring in subsidies, the i-MiEV will effectively sell for around 2 million yen.

Volume production of lithium ion batteries, the most expensive component in an electric vehicle, will lower costs sharply. A battery plant coming online in April 2012 will churn out 70,000 units a year, with the mass production cutting battery costs to under 1 million yen per vehicle, down from 2.5 million yen. Mitsubishi Motors will also work with the suppliers of motors, rechargers and other parts to reduce component numbers, making volume production easier.

Mitsubishi is also targeting an increase in automated manufacturing processes for EVs to about 10% of total assembly—on par with gasoline-fueled vehicles—from the current 2%.

Mitsubishi announces UK pricing for i-MiEV: £33,699

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV isn’t getting any cheaper as availability expands beyond Japan. The next market to get the little electric car will be the United Kingdom, and pricing was announced today. Including the 17.5-percent value added tax, the i-MiEV will run British buyers a cool £33,699 before a £5,000 government subsidy. That equates to about $50,500 at current exchange rates, well above the pre-subsidy price in the low $40K range in Japan.

On the EU test cycle, the range estimate has dropped from the 100 miles measured in Japan to only 80 miles and real-world results will quite possibly be even less than that.

Even with an electrical operating cost of about $214 for 12,000 miles of annual driving, it’s going to take a long time
to come out ahead financially. The standard gas-engined i is not available in the UK, but the sub-compact Colt starts at just £8,999. On the other hand, early adopters are helping to subsidize the future… if they can afford the present that is.

Mitsubishi Electric Shows Prototypes of Ultracapacitor-Battery Hybrid Energy Storage Device

Mitsubishi Electric Corp has demonstrated prototypes of a hybrid energy storage cell that combines the fast charge-discharge power capabilities and long life of an EDLC (electric double layer capacitor) and the greater energy storage capacity of a Li-ion battery in a single cell. The new device is expected to be used for storing regenerated power from a motor (i.e., through regenerative braking) or leveling the output of a photovoltaic system.

The company showed two prototypes of the device: a 10 Wh, 3 x 3 cm unit developed as a proof-of-principles device; and a 14 Wh, 6 x 9 cm flat-wound unit with power and energy densities of 3 kW/kg and 60 Wh/kg, respectively. Under an 8C rate, the 3 x 3 proof-of-principles unit achieved 2,000 cycles before degrading 20%—some four times the cycle life of the Li-ion batteries used as a baseline.

Average voltage is 3.2V, lower limit voltage is 2V and the upper limit is 4V.

The devices feature an anode shared by the capacitor and the battery, each of which have a cathode and a separator. The shared anode in the 3 x 3cm type is sandwiched between the two cathodes. In the larger, flat wound device, the first and second cathodes are formed on the front and back of a collector foil.

The key to realize the new device is the structure of the shared anode, Mitsubishi Electric said. The anode is made with carbon material. The capacitor cathode was made with activated carbon, and the battery cathode was made with a lithium-iron phosphate material.

Is there a demand for small electric cars? Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has discovered that, yes, there is. In fact, the trend that the company seems to have discovered is that whatever production numbers they’ve set need to be increased.

iMiEV, iQ, FCX Clarity – maailma roheliseimad 2009

Maailma roheliseima auto tiitlile kandideerivad seekord Toyota iQ, Mitsubishi iMiEV ja Honda FCX Clarity.  Kolm jaapanlast rebivad tiitli pärast kuni NY autoshowni aprillis.

Siinkohal toome teieni Mitsubishi iMiEVi Sport Air kupee esitluse  Genfi autoshow’lt.

Lisaks futuristlikumale välimusele on Sport Airi kupeel tava iMiEVist võimsam mootor ja pikemat sõitu lubav aku.

Peugeot, Citroen ja Mitsubishi…

… on suured sõbrad kolmekesi. Jaapanlased lubavad prantslastele 2010.a. lõpus kätte toimetada Citroeni/Peugeot kaubamärki kandvad iMIEVi põhised elektriautod.
